Pediatric Chiropractic

Gentle, safe chiropractic care for infants, children, and teens to support healthy spinal development and address common childhood conditions.

Pediatric Chiropractic Care in Provo

Children are not simply small adults. Their spines are growing, adapting, and constantly responding to the physical demands of development. At Alpine Spinal Rehab, we provide gentle, age-appropriate chiropractic care for patients from infancy through adolescence. Dr. Clark and Dr. Vanchiere have decades of experience working with young patients and understand that pediatric care requires a different approach, different techniques, and a different level of patience than adult treatment.

Why Children Need Chiropractic Care

The birth process itself places significant mechanical stress on an infant’s spine and skull. Whether delivered vaginally or by cesarean section, the forces involved in delivery can cause subtle misalignments in the upper cervical spine. As children grow, they encounter countless spinal stresses: learning to hold up their heads, sitting, crawling, taking first steps, falling while learning to walk, playground tumbles, carrying heavy backpacks, hunching over tablets and phones, and participating in sports.

Most of these events do not cause obvious injury, but cumulative micro-traumas can create spinal misalignments that affect nervous system development and overall health. Because children rarely complain about back pain the way adults do, these issues often go undetected until they manifest as other problems.

Conditions That Respond to Pediatric Chiropractic

Parents in Provo bring their children to our clinic for a variety of concerns:

  • Colic and excessive crying in infants, which may be related to upper cervical irritation
  • Difficulty nursing or latching that can stem from cervical restriction affecting jaw and neck mechanics
  • Ear infections that recur despite antibiotic treatment, potentially linked to Eustachian tube drainage affected by upper cervical alignment
  • Bedwetting in older children where sacral nerve irritation may play a role
  • Growing pains in the legs, back, and hips during periods of rapid development
  • Postural problems including forward head posture, scoliosis screening findings, and rounded shoulders
  • Sports injuries in young athletes whose bodies are still developing
  • Headaches in school-age children and teens, often related to cervical misalignment and screen time posture
  • ADHD and focus difficulties where some parents report improvements with regular chiropractic care

We want to be clear: chiropractic care is not a treatment for diseases. What it does is ensure that the spine is properly aligned and the nervous system is free from structural interference, which supports the body’s ability to function and heal optimally.

How We Adjust Children

Pediatric adjustments bear little resemblance to the adjustments adults receive. The techniques are modified significantly based on the child’s age, size, and developmental stage.

For infants, adjustments involve fingertip pressure no greater than what you would use to test the ripeness of a tomato. There is no twisting, no popping, and no sudden movements. The baby typically remains calm throughout the process, and many fall asleep during treatment.

For toddlers and young children, we use low-force instrument-assisted techniques and gentle manual adjustments. We take extra time to make the child comfortable in our office, explain what we are doing in age-appropriate language, and let them set the pace. A child who is relaxed and cooperative receives a much more effective adjustment than one who is tense and afraid.

For adolescents, our techniques more closely resemble adult care but remain adapted to their developing musculoskeletal system. The ProAdjuster is particularly well-suited for teens who may be apprehensive about manual adjustments, as it delivers precise corrections without the cracking sounds that some young patients find intimidating.

What Parents Should Know

We encourage parents to stay with their children throughout every visit. We want you to see exactly what we do, understand why we are doing it, and feel completely comfortable with your child’s care. Every recommendation we make will be explained thoroughly, and we will never pressure you into a treatment plan you are not confident about.

During your child’s first visit, we perform a thorough history and examination appropriate to their age. For older children, this may include postural analysis, range-of-motion testing, and palpation of the spine. For infants, the examination focuses on cervical motion, cranial symmetry, and muscle tone assessment.

Supporting Healthy Development

Regular spinal checkups for children serve the same preventive purpose as dental checkups for their teeth. Catching and correcting small alignment issues early prevents them from becoming larger structural problems as the child grows. Many families in Provo include chiropractic care as part of their children’s routine wellness plan alongside pediatrician visits and dental cleanings.
